Our concept of chromosomes has three distinct sources:

• the genetic chromosome, derived from studies of the inheritance of traits;
• the morphological chromosome, derived from microscopic examination of chromosomes; and
• the molecular chromosome, derived from analysis of the DNA of chromosomes.

Each conceptual type can be related experimentally to the others.

Chromosome replication is central to genetic transmission.
