Chromosome Conceptual Types
Our concept of chromosomes has three distinct sources:
- the genetic chromosome, derived from studies of the inheritance of traits;
- the morphological chromosome, derived from microscopic examination of chromosomes;
and
- the molecular chromosome, derived from analysis of the DNA of chromosomes.
Each conceptual type can be related experimentally to the others.
Chromosome replication is central to genetic transmission.
