Uncovery of exceptions to Gregor Mendel's Law of independent assortment:

• resulted from the study of sex-linked traits;
• resulted in the concept that some traits were linked
• and that linked traits could recombine.

Studies of the degree of linkage of many pairs of recombining traits revealed a consistent linear relationship. The linear relationship allows the construction of linear maps.
