The variation of repetition frequency was discovered by analysis of the kinetics of DNA reassociation. These analyses also allowed calculation of the complexity of genomes and demonstration that some reated sequences are interspersed with unique sequences.

How these sequences are related to one another can be determined by construction of molecular maps.
