The DNA sequences of fragments of an organism's genome may be:

• unique, unrelated to those of any other fragment;
• moderately repeated, similar to sequences of several other fragments;
• or highly repeated, similar to sequences of many other fragments.

The variation of repetition frequency was discovered by analysis of the kinetics of DNA reassociation. These analyses also allowed calculation of the complexity of genomes and demonstration that some reated sequences are interspersed with unique sequences.

How these sequences are related to one another can be determined by construction of molecular maps.
