Cleavage (nucleolytic scission) of RNA transcripts is important in the production of several mature RNAs:

• removal of introns from pre-tRNAs;
• trimming of 5' and 3' sequences from pre-tRNAs;
• production of mature rRNAs;
• generation of mature mRNAs and tRNAs from mitochondrial RNA transcripts;
• resolution of products of rolling circle RNA replication.

Other processing events that RNAs undergo are splicing, capping, polyadenylation, base and sugar modification, editing, and degradation.
